What's the longest piece you've ever written? Was the process mostly linear or did it expand from a few core ideas?

The longest piece I’ve ever written has been about 20-30ish pages, as far as I can recall. It was poorly constructed and failed midway through. Mostly, in the past, I’ve been working at things linearly (as that’s how I usually do short stories) but I’ve realized that I can’t use that approach for longer pieces; I’m currently writing a new long piece which I’m approaching in instances rather than a linear progression of plot. We’ll see how it turns out…
